 | No Dial Tone Error 680
Summary: when (changes?), scanreg, call messenger, connection, test connection, re-boot, programs, dial tone detection, re-install modem.
1. When is the last time they successfully connected? If never make sure the phone line is running to the modem correctly. 2. If they were connected okay yesterday and have not done anything new to their computer (new software, hardware, strange e-mails, etc.) You can do a scanreg /restore (see job aid). 3. Do they have Call Messenger service and are their messages waiting. They have to clear the messages. 4. Is the phone line hooked directly from the wall to the computer? They should not have any splitters, fax machines, etc If they have a caller ID box tell them to try disconnecting the ID box and trying to connect. 5. They should test the jack and phone line by disconnecting the phone line from the back of the computer and plugging it into a phone. 6. Have they re-booted since they have had this problem? No Reboot and try again. 7. Make sure that no other programs are using the modem. Fax software, Winfax, Supervoice, etc... 8. Try unchecking the wait for dial tone before dialing check box. Go to the Control Panel. Double click on the Modems Icon (may need to click on Show All icons to see modem icon). Select their modem and left click on Properties. Choose the connection tab and uncheck the dial tone check box. 9. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the modem (caution if ISP only they may need drivers). Could be a modem problem. - Electrical storm? Vendor for hardware failure.
